Apple Unveils iOS 17.5, macOS 14.5, and More with New iPad Launch

Apple has rolled out the latest updates for nearly all its actively supported devices today, bringing a slew of enhancements and security patches. These updates encompass several security enhancements, additional features for Apple News+ subscribers, and the introduction of Cross-Platform Tracking Protection for Bluetooth devices.

The iOS 17.5, iPadOS 17.5, macOS 14.5, watchOS 10.5, tvOS 17.5, and HomePod Software 17.5 updates are now available for download. Notably, Cross-Platform Tracking Protection sends notifications to users when a compatible Bluetooth tracker, not owned by them, is detected in their vicinity, irrespective of the paired operating system. This feature builds upon existing safeguards against AirTag stalking and extends protection to devices linked with non-Apple phones.

Apple News+ users can now enjoy Quartiles, a new word game, reflecting the trend of news outlets incorporating games as engagement tools. Quartiles, Crossword, and Mini Crossword also offer player stat tracking and offline access to the Today+ and News+ tabs.

Additionally, older Apple operating systems have received security-only updates to ensure their ongoing security. iOS 16.7.8 and iPadOS 16.7.8 updates cater to older iDevices unable to upgrade to iOS 17, while macOS Venture 13.6.7 and Monterey 12.7.5 support all Macs running those respective OS versions, regardless of their eligibility for macOS Sonoma.

These updates are likely the final major ones preceding this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10, where Apple typically unveils its next major operating systems for the fall. Following this event, updates for current versions typically prioritize security enhancements and bug fixes over introducing significant new features. Anticipated enhancements in this year’s updates include generative AI features, potentially powered by ChatGPT, and an enhanced Siri assistant.
